New Undergraduate Student Worker (St Ebbe’s Central) - Joseph Chu

Joseph Chu October 2026

When I think about how I was when I first came to Oxford and where I am now, I rejoice in how the Lord has grown me, and used my time as a student at St Ebbe’s to do that. Whether through fellowship around studying God’s Word, doing life together, or receiving care from the ministry team, life as a student at St Ebbe’s has been hugely significant for me. To be fair, not all of those moments were ‘enjoyable’ in the sense of being fun, as I was often confronted in those moments by my weaknesses and need for Christ. But now that I look back, I can see how I have grown as a result of those times. In a city that prides itself in accomplishment and superiority by comparison, having a community and teaching that constantly drew me back to my identity as a child of God and a follower of the Lord Jesus has led to me having a deeper and enduring joy.

At St Ebbe’s, I was given a community in which to grow into the person who I am – one who has been redeemed and loved by Christ, and been given his Spirit to grow from one degree of glory to another. Being able to grow in a loving, intentional, and honest community has set me up well for the next season of life. I’m able to better serve in various ways including in my skills and giftings I’ve developed while being at St Ebbe’s. But more importantly, I am able to serve better because I have been more gripped by the love of God for me. Of all the letters that I can put behind my name from my multiple degrees, MLCOG (much loved child of God) is the best one I’ve been given.

Reflecting back on my own time as a student, the thing I’m most excited about in my new role is seeing students grow in their love and knowledge of the Lord Jesus, and seeing that come out in different ways in their lives. Much of the fruit in this ministry won’t be seen immediately, and I trust the Lord to take the work we do and use it in the lives of the students in the years to come. So I guess what I’m really most excited about is being there on the Final Day and seeing those who were once students at St Ebbe’s, and hearing how the Lord has grown and kept them and used them for his glory, and getting to know that the Lord gave me the privilege of playing a small part in that.
